Pitztal glacier - New pipelines in the highest glacier ski area in Austria

Through their know-how Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM) was able to support ski resort Pitztal galcier with pipes for the construction of a pumping pipeline during the last two summers. The construction work was carried out by company Strabag. 8000 meters of GJS pipes with nominal diameters from DN 80 to DN 250 and a pressure rating of up to 85 bar were used. Since the highest point of the glacier is at 3440 meters above sea level, it was possible to build only between the months of June to October. The construction period of two years resulted from this short window of time and the complex construction work, in which the pipeline had to be bust into the rock. An extraction plant was built, in which meltwater from the Mittelbergferner on the glacier‘s foothills was collected. A sand trap filters the glacial polish from the water, which is then pumped through the new TRM-pipes into a reservoir pond. The difference in height between the extraction plant and the reservoir pond is just about 350 meters in altitude.
