Bergbahnen Wilder Kaiser GmbH is an important part of the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental in Tyrol and operates 18 cable cars and lifts in the Ellmau-Going ski area. It also offers access to 288 kilometers of slopes at over 1,800 meters above sea level in the Brixental Valley with its 91 cable car facilities. Currently, 85% of the slopes are covered with technical snow, which should also be ensured for future seasons, despite shorter snowmaking times. The expansion of the Hartkaiser and Tanzboden reservoirs and the construction of a new pumping station will increase the efficiency of snowmaking.
During this project, the Hartkaiser storage pond was expanded from 80,000 m³ to 140,000 m³ and the Tanzboden storage pond from 120,000 m³ to 164,500 m³. This means that more water can be stored, which means that less water is required from the springs in the fall and winter. The new two-storey pumping station at Hartkaiser has a total throughput capacity of 720 l/s and a cooling tower system with a capacity of 450 l/s.
High-quality ductile iron pipes from TRM were used for the additional 8 km long field pipeline network. These pipes, with a PUR Longlife coating, offer excellent corrosion protection and a long lifespan. The VRS®-T system allows a simple and quick installation, which significantly shortens the construction time. Thanks to regional manufacture and short delivery distances combined with high quality and pressure resistance from PN63 to PN100, TRM pipes are ideal for the harsh alpine conditions.
Although the construction time was short compared to the size of the project, it was successfully completed in collaboration with Klenkhart & Partner Consulting, HV-Bau GmbH and TRM. Thanks to this investment, the Wilder Kaiser mountain railroads can now technically prepare their slopes for the basic snow within four days, which significantly improves snow reliability and conditions for guests. The expansion of the snowmaking facilities is a key step towards future and quality assurance in winter tourism.
