Foundation of a housing facility

A new 3-story housing facility for MMA Cadets, spanning 2,851 square meters, was constructed near the Cape Cod Canal, requiring a foundation robust against the canal's scour effects. The site consisted of diverse soil layers, including granular fill, peat/organics, and marine sand and gravel, with groundwater at 1.8 meters below grade.

The primary challenge was to ensure foundation stability against storm surges (scour events); while 108 Pressure Injected Footings (PIFs) were initially planned, they were replaced by Ductile Iron Piles (DIP) with a Series 170/7.5 pile section for cost and time efficiency.

A 7.6-meter DIP test pile impressively sustained up to 150 tons, demonstrating its reliability and capacity to handle above-expected loads. The team swiftly installed the 108 Ductile Iron Piles within a week, showcasing a faster alternative to the PIFs and minimizing disturbances in the vicinity.
