Pitztal Glacier

New pipelines in the highest glacier ski area in Austria

Through its know-how Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM) was also able to support the Pitztal Glacier ski area with pipes during the construction of a pumping line in the past two summers. The construction work was carried out by Strabag. 8000 meters of GJS pipes in nominal sizes from DN 80 to DN 250 and a pressure rating up to 85 bar were used. Since the highest point of the glacier is located at 3440 meters above sea level, could be built only in the months of June to October.

The construction period of two years resulted from this short window of time and the costly execution of the construction work, in which lines for the pipes had to be blown up into the rock. An extraction plant was built, in which meltwater from the Mittelbergferner on the glacier foothills was collected. In a sand trap, the glacier cut is filtered out of the water, which is then pumped through the new TRM pipes into a storage pond. The difference in height between removal building and storage pond is just under 350 meters in altitude.

Safe water supply.
