The first main pipeline was built between 1909 and 1911 in the course of the construction of the second Vienna high spring pipeline. As a large transport line, the pipeline runs through several districts and, due to its altitude, forms the most important supply line for Vienna's water supply. Thus, a good 35% of the total water volume of the second Vienna high spring pipeline is distributed to the entire city area via the first main pipeline coming from the southwest of Vienna. As a result of several technical defects, the gray cast iron pipes, which are a good 100 years old, were found to be in need of rehabilitation. It was therefore decided to renew the pipeline over a length of 900 meters. Due to the requirements on the pipelines to ensure maximum safety and an optimum water supply, Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM) was also commissioned as a reliable partner for this project. Pipes with a nominal diameter of DN1000 were supplied with the proven restrained locking system and ZMU coating. The pipe laying was carried out by the contractors of the Municipal Department 31 Vienna Water . These contractors were specially trained by TRM in advance. The experienced technicians of the Tyrolean company were able to pass on their special know-how in pipe laying. For the laying itself, insertion openings were made every 80 meters. The individual pipes were then inserted into the trench by truck and crane, which required a great deal of experience and tact. Due to the rapid availability of the pipes by the Tyrolean manufacturer and the well-functioning coordination of the individual departments, as well as all companies involved, the work is currently ahead of the agreed construction schedule. Completion of the pipeline section is scheduled for fall 2021.
Safe water supply.
