Drinkinmg water transport on steep slopes
In 2023, Salzburg AG, under the leadership of Dipl.-Ing. Ludwig Staiger, successfully renewed a roughly 480-meter section of the drinking water transport pipeline to the Mönchsberg reservoir. The project posed significant challenges due to steep slopes, confined construction areas, and protected historic structures.
The pipeline has been supplying large parts of Salzburg with drinking water since 1929. In recent years, increasing pipe failures—most notably in 2023—made the renovation urgently necessary. The new pipeline was equipped with ductile cast iron pipes from Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM), known for their high durability and easy installation.
To overcome the difficult terrain and limited space, helicopters were used to precisely transport the pipes. Environmental protection measures, such as amphibian fences, were implemented, and open communication with local residents was a key part of the project.
Throughout construction, the water supply was maintained via a reduced network, with careful switching between old and new pipes to ensure continuous service. With an investment volume of 4.5 million euros, this project marks an important step toward the long-term security of Salzburg’s water supply. The durable cast iron pipes are designed for decades of reliable service.
Further renovation phases of the over seven-kilometer-long transport pipeline are already in planning.
Safe water supply.
