Hansl Power: Hydropower from the Nock Mountains

Implemented Independently using TRM Ductile Iron Pipes

A new small hydropower plant was recently commissioned in the UNESCO Biosphere Park Nockberge in Carinthia. “Hansl Power” generates around 340,000 kWh of green electricity annually – a project realized by the engineer couple DI Jörg and DI Anja Hudelist, driven by expertise, initiative, and a strong focus on sustainability.

A key element of the project was the 1.2 km long pressure pipeline, for which high-quality ductile iron pipes from Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM) were used. The thrust- and tension-resistant pipes, featuring the VRS®-T joint and Pur Longlife coating in DN 200 with a pressure rating of PN 40, were installed precisely and efficiently despite the mountainous terrain and challenging weather conditions. For the crossing of the Nockalm Road, a ZMU pipe was used – ensuring maximum protection in sensitive areas.

Thanks to the socket joints’ ability to bend up to 4°, the need for fittings was largely eliminated – a clear advantage when routing the pipeline through steep terrain. In addition, power and fiber optic cables were laid alongside the pipeline to future-proof the infrastructure.

In the powerhouse, a custom-designed single-jet Pelton turbine from Carinthian hydropower specialist EFG (Ing. Werner and DI Martin Goldberger) provides a rated output of 55 kW. The system is precisely tailored to the available water volume and head – ensuring reliable and economical operation.
