New Elevated Water Tank for St. Johann

Narvik trusts proven TRM piping systems

For the 50th Alpine World Ski Championships in 2029, a high-performance snowmaking infrastructure is being developed in Narvik, Norway, designed to ensure maximum snow reliability even under challenging climatic conditions. The host city is located around 220 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, yet benefits from a comparatively mild climate due to the Gulf Stream. To nevertheless guarantee consistent slope conditions, the ski resort is investing in modern and reliable technical snowmaking.

The internationally active company DEMACLENKO has been commissioned to implement the entire snowmaking system and is delivering a comprehensive performance package in Narvik. This includes, among other things, the construction of a pump station, a pressure-boosting system, and a new storage reservoir. A central component of the project is the pipeline network, which ensures a secure water supply for the snowmaking facilities. For this purpose, DEMACLENKO is relying on the proven piping systems of Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM).

For the project, TRM is supplying a total of around 10,500 meters of ductile iron pipes with VRS®-T restrained joints in nominal diameters ranging from DN 100 to DN 400 and pressure classes from PN 30 to PN 85. The pipes had to be transported over a distance of approximately 3,200 kilometers to the construction site in northern Norway - a logistical challenge that was successfully managed thanks to careful planning.

TRM ductile iron pipes are specifically designed for high pressures and use in alpine terrain. Internally cement-lined and externally coated with a zinc layer and a PUR topcoat, they offer optimal corrosion protection and a service life of more than 50 years. The restrained VRS®-T joint allows for fast and flexible installation without welding or additional concrete thrust blocks, ensuring maximum operational safety at pressures of up to 100 bar. Construction work on the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
