With the Kastelbell–Galsaun bypass, the Autonomous Province of Bolzano is implementing one of the most significant infrastructure projects in western South Tyrol. The goal is to sustainably relieve the town centers, which are heavily burdened by through traffic, while significantly improving road safety and traffic flow in the Vinschgau Valley. The core element of the 3.36-kilometer route is a tunnel approximately 2.5 kilometers long, constructed under challenging geological conditions and designed to meet the highest standards in safety and operation.
The implementation of the project requires a complex interplay of tunnel construction, logistics, and technical equipment. Conventional excavation methods, several emergency escape tunnels, modern ventilation and safety systems, as well as a high-performance drainage concept place demanding requirements on planning and execution. Particular attention is given to ensuring permanently reliable infrastructure within the tunnel interior.
A key element of the safety and operational systems is formed by the fire-extinguishing and drainage pipelines supplied by Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM). In the event of a fire, they ensure a reliable water supply, and during normal operation they provide dependable drainage of rainwater and groundwater. Ductile iron pipes are used, specifically designed to withstand high mechanical loads, confined spaces, and the demanding conditions of tunnel construction.
Thanks to their high pressure and bending strength as well as their excellent corrosion resistance, TRM’s ductile iron pipes offer a service life of many decades, thus meeting the key requirements for low maintenance and operational reliability. With commissioning planned for 2026, a forward-looking transport solution is being created that not only sets technical standards but also makes a sustainable contribution to the quality of life in Kastelbell, Galsaun, and throughout the Vinschgau Valley.
