Replacement of the Transport and Pressure Pipeline

The existing transport and pressure pipeline from 1966

In the Swiss municipality of Mels (Canton of St. Gallen), the existing transport and pressure pipeline from 1966 has been renewed. It plays a key role in the drinking water supply for WV Mels and is also used for energy generation. By using a pipe with a larger diameter, the connected turbine can now generate more power with the same amount of water.

The 660-meter-long main pipeline with a diameter of DN 300 is being installed using ductile iron pipes rated PN 40, supplemented by 27 fittings rated PN 85. The project utilizes the thrust- and tensile-resistant VRS®-T joint system, which allows a dynamic angular deflection of up to 4°, enabling flexible installation in the steep terrain.

Helicopters and walking excavators are being used to transport and lay the pipes. The pipes are coated with the robust ZMU Austria external coating, providing excellent protection against corrosion and mechanical stress.

“This ensures long-term security of supply for Mels while also making efficient use of the hydropower potential,” says Markus Hilbi, Head of Water Supply, Electricity and Waterworks Mels.
