Foundation of an airfield

Foundation of an airfield, Austria

The rebuilding of Hangar 4 at Zell am See airfield faced a major challenge due to the geologically complex soil conditions in the Zell valley. The region is characterized by complex soil structures, including non-load-bearing peat layers, which required the selection of a suitable foundation solution. The decision to use TRM Piling Systems meant that a stable and efficient deep foundation could be realized. The construction time of around one year and the planned completion by autumn 2024 underline the successful progress of the project.

The soil conditions in the Zell valley, consisting of unstable peat layers and sandy soil, presented the planners with considerable challenges. Conventional shallow foundations were not practicable due to the poor load-bearing capacity of the upper soil layers. The choice fell on TRM pile systems, which offered an optimal solution with their TRM 118 ductile driven piles. These piles were able to go through the non-load-bearing layers and provide secure support in deeper, more load-bearing soil layers. A total of 150 TRM ductile driven piles with a maximum design load of 500 kN each were installed. Some of the piles were specially designed to absorb alternating loads in order to counteract the uplift forces caused by wind.

The TRM Piling Systems offer outstanding advantages in terms of safety, flexibility and reliability. Thanks to the choice of TRM ductile driven piles, the project could be realized efficiently and with minimal effort in the difficult ground conditions. The high load-bearing capacity of the piles ensures the long-term stability of Hangar 4. Particularly noteworthy is the quick and uncomplicated installation of the TRM Piling Systems, which led to a significant reduction in construction time and optimized cost efficiency. The flexibility of the piles, which adapt to various requirements such as alternating loads, also ensures long-term stability.

Thanks to the fast installation and flexible adaptability of the TRM pile systems, Hangar 4 was able to be founded in a stable and cost-efficient manner on the challenging ground conditions in the Zell basin. The project went according to plan and the construction work was completed by autumn 2024.
