In 2023, the renowned winter sports destination of Sestriere, part of the Via Lattea ski area network, launched an ambitious project to modernize its technical snowmaking system. As part of the extensive four-phase plan, ductile iron pipes from Tiroler Rohre GmbH (TRM) were used in the field pipelines for the first time. This was carried out in close cooperation with Italian business partner Demaclenko, who played a key role in the implementation of the project.
Those responsible in Sestriere were faced with the challenge of developing a reliable and energy-efficient snowmaking system that could withstand the extreme weather conditions and the special altitude of the area. TRM provided a tailor-made solution by replacing the existing steel pipes with ductile iron pipes. These are characterized by high compressive strength and durability, making them ideal for use in extreme weather conditions.
The switch to TRM ductile iron pipes in dimensions DN 80 to DN 400 and the implementation of the latest snow gun technology enabled the system to be more powerful and efficient. The use of the patented VRS®-T jointing system, which enables fast installation regardless of the weather, played a decisive role in the timely completion.
TRM's ductile iron pipe technology not only offers exceptional safety and durability, but also significant benefits in terms of energy efficiency. The new system reduces energy consumption by around 20 percent compared to previous systems. Thanks to the robust choice of materials and innovative installation technology, future repairs can be minimized and operations secured for the long term.
The construction work was accompanied by extreme weather conditions, particularly in the alpine sections of the ski resort. Despite these challenges, the TRM Pipe System was implemented efficiently under difficult conditions thanks to its easy handling and quick installation.
Within this project, a total of over 15,600 m of TRM pipes were installed by 2024. By continuously improving the snow-making infrastructure, operators benefit from greater efficiency and lower operating costs. In the long term, the entire Via Lattea ski resort will benefit from this modern technology. TRM has once again proven that quality, innovation and partnership are the key to the successful implementation of major projects.
